Smart Money Concepts (SMC): Market Structure & Liquidity
Deconstruct institutional price action. Understand how liquidity pools, buy-side & sell-side liquidity, and change of character (CHoCH) generate high-probability trade setups.
- Price moves between areas of resting liquidity (stops resting above swing highs and below swing lows).
- Break of Structure (BOS) indicates trend continuation; Change of Character (CHoCH) signals early trend reversal.
- Institutional traders cannot enter market orders without absorbing retail liquidity.
- Patience to wait for the liquidity sweep before entry prevents premature stopped-out trades.
Where Does Price Actually Go?
Most retail traders believe prices bounce off arbitrary support and resistance lines drawn on their charts. In reality, modern financial markets are driven by algorithmic market makers matching buy and sell orders.
Algorithms have two primary objectives: 1. Seek Liquidity: Move price to where large clusters of stop-loss orders are resting. 2. Rebalance Inefficiency: Fill Fair Value Gaps (FVG) and order imbalances left behind during aggressive moves.
Core SMC Definitions You Must Know
1. Buy-Side Liquidity (BSL) vs Sell-Side Liquidity (SSL) - BSL: Located above swing highs and equal highs (EQH). It consists of retail short traders' stop losses (which are buy stop orders) and breakout traders' buy stop orders. - SSL: Located below swing lows and equal lows (EQL). It consists of long traders' stop-loss sell orders.

2. The Liquidity Sweep (The "Judas Swing") Institutions need millions in liquidity to build massive long positions. They cannot simply buy without driving price against themselves. Therefore, they push price down just below a key support level to trigger thousands of retail stop-loss orders (selling). Once those sell orders hit the book, the institution absorbs them as buy orders, and price violently rockets in the opposite direction!
3. Change of Character (CHoCH) vs Break of Structure (BOS) - BOS: A break of a swing high in an established uptrend, signaling trend continuation. - CHoCH: The first lower low in an uptrend, signaling that smart money is beginning distribution.
The 4-Step SMC Prop Execution Model
- Higher Timeframe Bias (4H / 1H): Identify whether price is heading toward a 4H BSL or SSL liquidity pool.
- The Sweep: Wait for price to raid the liquidity pool and reject sharply (leaving long candle wicks).
- Lower Timeframe CHoCH (15m / 5m): Look for an aggressive impulse move that breaks the recent swing low/high, leaving a Fair Value Gap.
- Entry at FVG: Place limit order inside the Fair Value Gap with stop loss safely above the sweep high. Target the opposing liquidity pool (1:2.5 to 1:4 R:R).
